Zak has been playing drums for over 25 years, concentrating on a variety of styles and performance situations. Currently, Zak plays with The Swingin’ Swamis, a Baltimore-based group cited recently by Baltimore Magazine as “one of this area’s premier party bands”. The Swamis play an eclectic mix of classic R&B, soul, jazz and Latin as featured on their four CDs and numerous live performances. Moss Icon, a band that Zak is currently writing new material with, was cited by Alternative Press Magazine as one of “23 Bands Who Shaped Punk”. Zak also plays drum set, hand drums and percussion for The Baltimore Afrobeat Society, who were chosen as “Best Tribute Act” by the Baltimore City Paper. The BAS exclusively plays the music of Fela Kuti, the legendary Nigerian musician and composer. Using a variety of drums and other percussion instruments, Zak also works as a modern dance accompanist for area universities and dance companies, providing live music and percussion based compositions. He also teaches a World Drumming class at Towson University.
