Due to the many requests, I have put together a list of equipment beginner drum students may want to beg, borrow, barter, or buy for their first lesson.

For your convenience I have added links to specific products from online merchants. I do get a small advertising fee for purchases made through these links which helps to offset the costs of running this website. That keeps your drum lesson costs low.

Beginning Percussion Equipment

The samples linked represent good beginner equipment at value prices. These are suggestions only. Feel free to choose any other brand or quality level you desire. If money is tight, both Guitar Center and Amazon also offer used equipment. And don’t forget to check with your friends and on Craigs List.

Snare Drum Lessons

As a beginning student of the snare drum you will learn rudiments, technique, and reading.

Drumsticks are required for playing and practice. To start with, a student should have access to a practice pad and/or snare drum. The practice pad provides a take-anywhere surface with the bounce characteristics of a snare drum but at a much lower volume. It can be used with or without the snare drum.

Drum Set Lessons

My drum set lessons cover different styles, technique, reading, independence, and creativity.

Beginner students should own drum sticks (Guitar Center, Amazon). They will need access to a drum set to practice and will likely want to acquire a set when you’re ready to commit.

Following is a list of drum sets that may be appropriate for beginners and intermediate drummers. They are listed from cheaper to more expensive. These are not your only choices so feel free to seek out the set that fits your style and budget.
