With over 15 years teaching experience, Zak Fusciello is a patient and experienced drum instructor. A graduate of St. Mary’s College of Maryland, Zak has taught drum lessons privately in Washington D.C., at Bill’s Music in Catonsville, MD and at the Baltimore School for Drumming in Baltimore, MD. Currently, as an adjunct faculty member and accompanist at Towson University, Zak teaches a World Drumming class and co-teaches a class called Music Concepts for Dancers. He is also an accompanist at Goucher College and has been a guest lecturer at Howard County Community College.
Students can take lessons on hand-drums and/or drum-set in a variety of styles. All styles including punk, jazz, latin, pop, African, Middle Eastern, Brazilian, R&B, funk, reggae, Afro-Cuban and rock are fair game. From recording with Steve Hansgen and Brian Baker of Minor Threat to performing and recording with Moss Icon, The Swingin’ Swamis and the Baltimore Afrobeat Society, Zak is used to navigating through many different styles and even combining a few along the way.
In addition to different styles of music and drumming, students can expect to learn proper grip and technique, rudiments, independence, musicality, music reading and writing skills, time keeping (playing a rhythm without speeding up or slowing down), enhanced creativity, soloing ideas and real world advice and tips on performing and recording. This doesn’t happen magically, of course. In order to get results, students must practice regularly. Exercises and assignments are given after each lesson and guidance on how to practice effectively is offered if needed. Having been a student himself, Zak knows what it’s like to learn to drum and that every student learns differently. That’s why there is always an emphasis on patience, encouragement and the tastes and preferences of each student.
